Employment Opportunities On The Increase For Hills District Job Seekers

Wednesday April 7, 2008

With some of the best unemployment rates in the Sydney metropolitan area, now is the time for Hills District job seekers to flex their bargaining muscle with employers, according to ASX-listed recruitment company Hamilton James & Bruce.

The December 2007 Central West Sydney unemployment rate - which includes the Hills District - of 4.3%, is slightly lower than the overall Sydney metropolitan rate of 4.4%.

“A small or declining unemployment rate indicates a strong demand in the labour market,” said Hamilton James & Bruce General Manager Robert Esposito.

“In any market where there is a strong demand, prices increase and in the labour market, employers now have to pay the right money and be more flexible in their terms and conditions to attract quality talent.

“It is therefore an ideal time for people who are looking to work in a part-time or flexible capacity.

“This could be women wanting to return to the workforce after having children, or men or women who simply want to work fewer hours per week or spend some of their week working from home,” Esposito said.

“Nearly 35% of the Central West Sydney workforce is in professional occupations with skills, qualifications and experience that are now in more demand then ever before.

“With an increasing number of large private and public sector employers relocating to Western Sydney, the opportunities for job seekers in the west are becoming more and more promising,” Esposito said.

As a result of the small labour pool, job seekers being offered a position are then being counter-offered by their current employer who does not want to risk losing a valuable employee.

“Our consultants will assist job seekers during the negotiation and counter-offer process.  Most employers are aware that with the continuing skills shortage, candidates are likely to have the upper hand when bargaining.  It is our role to ensure that the job seeker receives the salary and entitlements they are worth and that the employer is receiving genuine value for money from their new employee,” added Esposito.
